6 website design tips for an interior design studio

Your website is often the first impression potential clients have of your interior design business—so it needs to reflect your expertise, style and professionalism. A well-designed website doesn’t just look good; it also helps attract the right clients, showcase your work effectively, and make the inquiry process seamless.

Whether you’re just getting started or refining your online presence, here are six essential website design tips to help you stand out and grow your interior design business.

1 - Lead with your best work

If you are fairly new in your interior design business, your goal is to establish yourself as a professional and reliable designer. Often, business owners think the best way to do this is to showcase every project or piece of work they have had a hand in creating. Whilst it’s important to show that you are experienced, it’s not necessary to share everything.

Firstly, your potential client browsing the website only has so much time and is very unlikely to view all 20 project on your site. Focus on creating a curated portfolio of projects that shows your style, the work your most proud of and that has the best imagery (more on that below).

Quality over quantity is key.

Tip: Keep your portfolio organized—consider categorizing projects by style (e.g., “Modern Apartments,” “Cozy Family Homes”) or service type (e.g., “Full Home Remodels,” “Single-Room Styling”).

2 - Attract your perfect clients

This is building on what we’ve just spoken about when building your portfolio. Not only should you be sharing your ‘best’ work but be selective in sharing the work that you would like more of. The works both ways - not only will it help you to book more of the types of project you enjoy working on, but it will allow clients who are looking for your particular aesthetic in their home or building to find you.

For example, if your strength is creating colourful family home, using patterns and textures but on your portfolio you’ve shared a stark modern office that you have also worked on you’ll be creating a confusing picture for potential clients. They will wonder if you are the perfect designer for them.

Tip: When choosing images, think about the types of projects you want to attract more of. If you dream of designing modern minimalist spaces, highlight those rather than a variety of styles.

3 - Clearly outline your services

Potential clients browsing your site shouldn’t feel confused at any point. If they do, it’s likely they’ll click away and check out another option. The goal of your site is for a potential client to get in touch about working together, so make sure it’s super clear what services or packages you offer.

Your services page should be clear, simple, and easy to navigate.

  • Use obvious headings for different service options - it’s tempting to give packages stylist names but a client might not know exactly what that is, so if you are including package names, be sure to follow it up with a very clear sub-title.

  • Include a short, concise description for each service.

  • If pricing is flexible, consider adding “starting from” prices to manage client expectations.

Tip: If you offer a free consultation, make it obvious with a call-to-action like “Book a Free Discovery Call” or “Get Started Today.”

4 - Share Your Design Process

Clients want to know what it’s like to work with you before reaching out. A step-by-step guide to your design process makes potential clients feel more comfortable and confident about hiring you. It removes any mystery about the process and will make them feel more excited about working with you and the design process.

Some great ways to do this are adding:

  • A simple step-by-step breakdown of how your services work.

  • A short video or infographic explaining your process.

  • Client testimonials at key points to reinforce trust.

5 - Make It Easy to Get in Touch

A potential client shouldn’t have to hunt for your contact info. Your contact form or booking button should be easy to find on every page—whether in your navigation menu, footer, or at the bottom of each service page.

If you offer discovery calls, embed a booking calendar (like Calendly or Squarespace Scheduling) so visitors can book instantly, rather than waiting for an email reply.

6 - Optimize for SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

Want to attract local clients? Make sure your website is optimized for search engines so potential clients in your area can find you.

  • Mention the town, city, or region you serve in your website copy (especially on your homepage and service pages).

  • Add location details to your portfolio project descriptions (e.g., “Luxury Apartment Renovation in Edinburgh”).

  • Rename your images with SEO-friendly file names (e.g., “edinburgh-interior-designer-modern-living-room.jpg” instead of “IMG_1234.jpg”).

Keep Your Site Fast & Functional

Interior design websites are often image-heavy, which can slow down loading times. To keep your website running smoothly:

  • Compress images before uploading (use free tools like TinyPNG).

  • Use web-friendly image sizes (avoid uploading massive, high-res files).

  • Stick to clean, simple navigation so visitors can easily find what they need.

Your website should feel like an extension of your brand—beautiful, strategic, and client-focused. By showcasing your best work, making your services easy to understand, and optimizing for SEO, you’ll attract the right clients and build a thriving interior design business.
